Genus Deribia Westwood, 1841

Compiler and date details

20 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Metcalf (1945) states that Westwood (1841) introduced this name as a new genus for Anotia coccinea Guérin-Méneville, 1829, but Westwood (1841: 13) actually states that he has created Deribia as a new subgenus for the species. He refers the subgenus, however, to Anotia Kirby which is a senior homonym of Anotia Guérin-Méneville. In 1843, Guérin-Méneville synonymised Deribia with the preoccupied Anotia Guérin-Méneville thereby using Deribia at the generic rank for the first time. It is therefore Guérin-Méneville (1843) who should be credited with the combination Deribia coccinea rather than Westwood (1841).

Distribution

Recorded from "Australia".

Diagnosis

I have been unable to obtain a diagnosis of this genus. Westwood (1841) introduced the name with the following statement: "M. Guérin has figured an insect in his 'Iconographie du Règne Animal,' Insectes, pi. 58. fig. 13, under the name of Anotia coccinea, which he has described in the text of the ' Voyage de la Coquille' as an inhabitant of the Australian Archipelago, and which diflfers so materially from the type of the subgenus, especially in the veins of the wings, as well as their large size, that it will be necessary to establish a distinct subgenus for its reception: I propose to name it Deribia coccinea." (Westwood 1841).
