Introduction
The family Dentatherinidae comprises a single species, Dentatherina merceri, which is found adjacent to tropical coral reefs in the west Pacific.
Ivantsoff et al. (1987) discussed relationships. The family was originally regarded as a subfamily of the Atherinidae, but elevated to a separate family by Parenti (1984). Dyer & Chernoff (1996) placed Dentatherina in its own subfamily of the Phallostethidae, as did Nelson (2006). Nelson (1994), whose classification is followed here, recognised the taxon in a separate monotypic family.
