Genus Cookeolus Fowler, 1928
- Cookeolus Fowler, H.W. 1928. The fishes of Oceania. Memoirs of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum 10: 1-540 figs 1-82 pls 1-49 [190] [first proposed as subgenus of Priacanthus Oken, 1817].
Type species:
Priacanthus japonicus Cuvier, 1829 (Anthias boops Forster, 1801 designated as type species, based on misidentified material, and we follow Starnes (1988) in placing Anthias boops into Heteropriacanthus) by subsequent designation, see Starnes, W.C. 1988. Revision, phylogeny and biogeographic comments on the circumtropical marine percoid fish family Priacanthidae. Bulletin of Marine Science 43(2): 117-203 [142] (we consider that Starnes (1988) designation was consistent with Articles 41, 65.2.3 and 70.3.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature; however formal fixation must be made in a scientific publication referring to Article 70.3.2 for the designation to become valid).
