Species Cirrhilabrus apterygia (Allen, 1983)

Connie's Wrasse, Mutant Wrasse, Rowley Shoals Wrasse

Introduction

While originally placed in the monotypic genus Conniella due to its lack of pelvic fins and pelvic girdle, this species has long been considered closely allied to the Cirrhilabrus (Randall, 1999; Tea et al. 2021). Further evidence of this was presented in the phylogenomic study of Tea et al. (2021) who showed Conniella to be deeply nested within Cirrhilabrus. They considered the loss of pelvic fins to be autapomorphic and in order to maintain Cirrhilabrus as monophyletic suggested Conniella be placed as a junior synonym. This was formalised by Tea et al. (2021) who also provide a re-description of C. apterygia.
