Introduction
It has been suggested (Allen & Erdmann 2012) that this species may be a junior synonym of C. margaritiferus, a species almost identical in appearance to C. gomoni. Choerodon margaritiferus is found in the northwestern Pacific (previously known from Philippines and Taiwan). Recent genetic studies have confirmed the validity of C. gomoni (Miyamoto et al. 2015, Puckridge et al. 2015), however one of the paratypes (WAM P.31498-001) is a misidentification of C. margaritiferus (Martin Gomon, Museum Victoria, pers. comm.).
