Genus Cheilodactylus Lacépède, 1803

Introduction

Molecular studies suggest that the genus Cheilodactylus may be polyphyletic (Burridge & Smolenski 2004). Randall (2005) elevated Goniistius from a subgenus to a genus and indicated that C. Burridge intended to restrict the genus Cheilodactylus to two South African species. Burridge & Smolenski (2004) and Burridge & White (2000) did not find evidence for monophyly of Goniistius as recognised up to that time. Burridge & White (2000) considered that seven species were sufficiently different to be separated into the genus Goniistius. However, Burridge (2004) treated Goniistius as a subgenus of Cheilodactylus. Burridge & Smolenski (2004) did indicate that the two South African species were monophyletic and distinct from other Cheilodactylus. We do not accept taxonomic changes in popular books, particularly where the work has been done by another worker. That factor plus the inconsistency in the literature has led us to retain the existing classification until a more thorough scientific work is published.
