Syntype(s) BMNH 1863.11.12.4, Bengkulu Province, Sumatra, Indonesia.
Introduction
This species has been recorded from many areas of Australia, but Kuiter (1995) separated the species into two, with Chaetodon trifasciatus restricted to the Indian Ocean, and with Australian records based on the Pacific species C. lunulatus.
