Species Chaetodon lunulatus Quoy & Gaimard, 1825

Pinstripe Butterflyfish, Lineated Butterfly-fish, Pacific Pinstriped Butterflyfish, Pinstriped Butterflyfish, Red-striped Butterfly-fish, Redfin Butterflyfish, Striped Butterflyfish

Introduction

The species was considered a synonym of Chaetodon trifaciatus, but Kuiter (1995) separated C. lunulatus, restricting C. trifasciatus to the Indian Ocean. Both species occur together in Indonesia (Randall 2005) and at Christmas Island (Hobbs et al. 2010). Chaetodon trifasciatus is known from Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island.
