Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
- Mohr, E. 1937. Revision der Centriscidae (Acanthoptergii, Centrisciformes). Dana Reports 13: 1-69 figs 1-33 pls 1-2 [19] (in part, also included Aeoliscus as a junior synonym)
Introduction
It has been suggested that Centriscus cristatus may be a junior synonym of C. scutatus because diagnostic characters change with growth (Paxton et al. 1989, Johnson 1999). However, we follow Kuiter (2003, 2009) and Allen & Erdmann (2012) and continue to recognise the two species as valid. As a result, some records of C. scutatus may represent misidentifications of C. cristatus, and the distributions presented here are tentative until further work can more fully resolve this issue.
