Introduction
While previously thought to be a wide ranging Indo-Pacific species, recent work has recognised three separate species. Bodianus perditio (Quoy & Gaimard 1834) in the west-central Pacific, B. solatus Gomon 2006 in the eastern Indian Ocean, and B. atrolumbus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1839, previously synonymised with B. perditio) from the western Indian Ocean (see Gomon 2006, Randall & Victor, 2013).
