Genus Atherinomorus Fowler, 1904

Introduction

We have retained the names Atherinomorus capricornensis and Atherinomorus endrachtensis for Australian species based on work of Ivantsoff & Crowley (1991). Work by Kimura et al. (2001, 2007) proposed a number of name changes for Australian species, but their study of Australian material was limited. Tentatively we accept Atherinomorus ogilbyi as a synonym of Atherinomorus vaigiensis. However, it should be noted that Ivantsoff & Crowley (1999) regarded Atherinomorus ogilbyi as a subtropical species from eastern and western Australia, but replaced by A. lacunosus (considered a senior synonym of A. vaigiensis) in northern Australia. Clearly further work is needed on the genus in Australia. It is likely that additional species occur in Australia (W. Ivantsoff, pers. com.).
