Genus Tetractenos Hardy, 1983

Introduction

The generic name is involved in a complex issue of nomenclature dating back to 1855. Kottelat (2001) indicated that Aphanacanthus predates Tetractenos. Hardy discussed the genus, but considered that Aphanacanthus was based on multiple species in multiple genera and considered it incertae sedis. At that time there was some uncertainty over the type species and a type species is required for genera named after 1930. Also it appeared that much of the material was based on Tetractenos glaber. Kottelat (2001) considered that Le Danois (1959) fixed the type species as Tetrodon hamiltoni. To permanently use the name Tetractenos, a case would have to be put to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature under Article 23.9.3. In the interests of stability we retain Tetractenos for the present.
