Genus Aluterus Cloquet, 1816

Introduction

There has been considerable confusion over the correct name for this genus. Cuvier (1816) introduced the name as a vernacular name. Subsequently three authors latinized the name, each with a different spelling including Aleuterus Bosc, 1816 with no included species, Aluterus Cloquet, 1816 with two included species, Aluterus monoceros and Aluterus kleinii and Alutera Oken, 1817 with no included species. All names have been used by various authors in the past. Clearly Alutera is not the oldest name. Whitley (1934) gives the date of publication for Bosc as September 1816, but the date of publication for Cloquet is unknown to us. We accept here Aluterus as the correct name, which is in current usage. It is, however, not clear when the type species was designated for that genus. Aluterus kleinii is now regarded as a synonym of Aluterus monoceros, effectively fixing the type species.
