- Acanthurus nigros Günther, A. 1861. Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum. Catalogue of the acanthopterygian fishes in the collection of the British Museum. London : British Museum Vol. 3 586 pp. [332] [in the index to the publication on p xxi, Günther attributes authorship to Cuvier and Valenciennes, suggesting that the name is an unjustified emmendation of Acanthurus nigroris; Randall et al. (2011) treated the description as original and selected a lectotype, rather than selecting the name Acanthurus bipunctatus Günther described in the same publication].

Great Barrier Reef off Townsville, (18°30'S) to One Tree Island, QLD and Coringa-Herald Cays, Lihou Reef and Frederick Reef, Coral Sea, record from Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a misidentification of A. nigrofuscus; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
