Introduction
The family Apistidae, often included as a subfamily of the Scorpaenidae (Nelson 1994, 2006), comprises three monotypic genera. All are known from Australia. The species are treated in Allen (1997) and Poss (1999).
Apistids live in the tropical waters of the Indo-west Pacific and are often found on coral reefs or the inshore continental shelf on rocky or coralline substrates. One species enters estuaries. Maximum size 13 cm.
