Diagnosis

The most intriguing and unique feature of Shiinoa is its mode of attachment and the morphological modifications resulting from it. The involvement of the anterior end of the animal in the attachment to the host caused the development of a 'cephalic neck', interposed between the oral region and the antennae. The muscles of the mandible and the maxilla can be seen extending from the mouth right through the 'neck' and attaching near the bases of the antennae, which shows that the origional position of the latter must have been much nearer the oral region than at present.
