   Holotype QM ♂ (coll.: 18.xi.1979, north slope, volcanic soil, 100 m, G.B. Monteith), Transit Hill, Lord Howe Island.

Introduction

This species has only been recorded from Lord Howe Island where numerous specimens were extracted from berlese samples of the leaf litter. Donaldson (1987) suggests that there is a distinct altitudinal difference on the island between the two species of Notuchus which have been found there, N. howensis being widespread in leaf litter across most of lower parts of the island while N. monticola Fennah appears to be associated with moss at the top of Mt Gower.

Diagnosis

Notuchus howensis is distinguished from the other Lord Howe Island species, N. monticola Fennah, by having the vertex less strongly produced in front of the eyes (less than 2 x length of an eye; more than 2 x in N. monticola) and by having the anterior marginal carina of the vertex visible from above. (Donaldson 1987)
