Tribe Candonini Kaufmann, 1900

Introduction

Tribe Candonini comprises mainly surface water Candoninae, distributed in Palaearctic, with only a couple of representatives elsewhere, including Australia. The following genera belong to this tribe (the number of species worldwide in brackets):

Diagnosis

Carapace of all different shapes: triangular, trapezoidal, elongate, very often ornamented. Antennula 7-, 6-, or 5-segmented. Antenna with or without male sexual bristles. Terminal segment of the mandibular palp with narrowly fused central claw. Maxillular palp with elongate penultimate segment. Both subterminal sclerified structures on the prehensile palps well developed. On the first thoracopod only one Ta seta present and two setae in vibratory plate. Second thoracopod with or without basal seta (d1). Third thoracopod without Te seta, Tf seta rarely present. Terminal segment with two long and one short seta. Caudal ramus with both claws and setae present, only posterior claws sometimes slightly reduced. Zenker's organ with six or seven whorls of spines.
