Family URODINYCHIDAE Berlese, 1917

Introduction

The family Urodinychidae as used here includes about 300 species. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1993) placed almost all the species in the single genus Uroobovella. They arranged the species in a series of species groups, which were previously treated as genera or subgenera. A revised future classification will probably divide the species among about ten genera. The genus Uroobovella was revised by Hirschmann (1989), but many new species have been added since that time. The European species were reviewed by Karg (1989) and Mašán (2001), both of whom list multiple synonyms for the genus name. Species of Uroobovella are found in soil and litter, dung, compost, guano, and the nests of mammals and insects. The deutonymphs are often phoretic on beetles that occur in the same habitats. The Australian fauna includes nine species, but the identity of several of them is questionable, and all are in need of revision.
