Family UROACTINIIDAE Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1964

Introduction

The family Uroactiniidae as used here includes three genera - Centrouropoda Berlese, 1916 (9 species), Chiropturopoda Sellnick, 1958 (6 species) and Uroactinia (about 50 species) (Hirschmann & Wisniewski, 1993). They are found world-wide in soil and litter, compost, under bark, and in ants' nests. The deutonymphs of some species are phoretic on beetles. The Australian fauna consists of two species of Uroactinia. Both were described by Hirschmann (1990), but both were collected in unusual circumstances. Uroactinia australiensis was collected from Australian commodities intercepted in quarantine in Europe, and is presumably of Australian origin. Uroactinia domrowi is known only from the deutonymphs, which were found in large numbers attached to a lizard in Queensland (Domrow, 1981).
