Genus Trematomus Boulenger, 1902
- Trematomus Boulenger, G.A. 1902. Pisces. pp. 174-189 in Lankester, E. R. Report on the collections of natural history made in the Antarctic regions during the voyage of the "Southern Cross". London : Printed by order of the Trustees 344 pp. [177].
Type species:
Trematomus newnesi Boulenger, 1902 by subsequent designation.
Introduction
Trematomus species were split into two genera by Balushkin (1982). Only the type species Trematomus newnesi was retained in the genus Trematomus, and all other species were assigned to a new genus: Pseudotrematomus. This generic division was based on several morphological criteria of the pectoral fins however several more recent studies using molecular techniques do not support this placement of T. newnesi (Near 2004; Kuhn & Near 2009; Janko et al. 2011; Lautrédou et al. 2011), and we retain the original classification of all species in the genus Trematomus (see also remarks for Trematomus in DeWitt et al. 1990).
