Extra Distribution Information

Widespread with a patchy distribution in the Murray-Darling system (middle and upper reaches of its southern tributaries), throughout southwestern and inland NSW, various waterways in VIC, including streams in the Portland and Grampians regions, and also in eastern, central and northern TAS (highest distribution in the Derwent river basin), north and south of the Great Dividing Range in VIC and in East Gippsland; temperate; native to Europe, but introduced worldwide; original introduction in Tasmania in the 1850s and 1870s, to Melbourne in 1860s and to a number of waterways in VIC, including the River Murray in 1876. Tench were also released into Western Australia (near Albany, York and Perth) in the 1890s, but the population was not sustained.
