Family TREMATURIDAE Berlese, 1917

Introduction

The family Trematuridae as used here includes about 400 species. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1989, 1993) placed all the species in the single genus Trichouropoda. They arranged the species in a series of species groups, which were previously treated as genera or subgenera. The status of these genus-level taxa is unresolved, and a revised future classification will probably divide the species among ten or more genera. The family is cosmopolitan, and includes species that occur in bark beetle galleries, soil and litter, and sometimes in the nests of ants and small mammals. The deutonymphs are phoretic on a variety of insects, especially beetles in the families Cerambycidae and Scolytidae. The Australian fauna includes five species, four of which are known from deutonymphs phoretic on brentid beetles. The other species, T. orbicularis, has been reported many times from a wide variety of locations and habitats. It is likely that this name has been applied to several different species.
