Family TRACHYUROPODIDAE Berlese, 1917

Introduction

The cosmopolitan family Trachyuropodidae includes about 100 species. Hirschmann & Wisniewski (1993) placed all the species in the single genus Trachyuropoda. They arranged the species in a series of species groups, which have sometimes been treated as genera or subgenera. The European fauna was reviewed by Karg (1989) and Mašán (2001). Trachyuropodids are found in soil, leaf litter, moss, and compost, and under bark, and many species have been found associated with ants or in their nests. The Australian fauna includes three myrmecophilous species that were described by Banks (1916) and Hull (1923), and have not been reported since, except in faunal lists. The identity and taxonomic placement of all three species must be considered as unconfirmed.
