Species Stegostoma fasciatum (Hermann, 1783)

Zebra Shark, Leopard Shark

Introduction

Note that two names are commonly in use for this species: Stegostoma varium and Stegostoma fasciatum (see Goto 2001). Dahl et al (2019) discuss reasons for S. varium to be treated as invalid, and suggest the correct name should be Stegostoma tigrinum Forster, 1781. We continue to follow Last & Stevens (2009) and current usage here until the suggestion of Dahl et al (2019) has gained broader usage, or a case is presented to and upheld by the IUCN to maintain current usage.
