Species Solonaima solonaima Kirkaldy, 1906

Compiler and date details

13 August 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

  • Type data:

Syntype(s) BPBM 4764 (coll.: viii.1904), Cairns, Queensland; BPBM (coll.: viii.1904), Cairns, Queensland
Comment: Kirkaldy (1906) did not designate a holotype, nor indicate how many specimens he examined although it can be implied that he had more than one specimen because he gave a size range for the length of the male. Hoch & Howarth (1989) note that there are two male specimens one of which bears a holotype label. The holotype labels on specimens in BPBM were probably added by Muir and have not been validated by publication. ICZN Art. 74.5 states that reference to a holotype by subsequent authors does not constitute a lectotype designation if the original publication implies that there are syntypes in existence. These two specimens therefore remain as syntypes.
