Subfamily Cixiinae Spinola, 1839

Compiler and date details

3 August 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

The Cixiidae are divided into three subfamilies (following Emeljanov 2002 and Holzinger et al. 2002): the Cixiinae, the Borystheninae Emeljanov, 1989 and the Bothriocerinae Muir, 1923. Of these, the largest and the only one occurring in Australia is the Cixiinae. Holzinger et al. (2002) recognised 15 tribes, of which eight have been recorded in Australia.

Diagnosis

The family diagnosis is adequate for the subfamily Cixiinae in Australia since this is the only subfamily recorded in Australia. The Borystheninae, with one genus, is known from the Ethiopian and Oriental regions while the Bothriocerinae, with two genera, is known from the Nearctic and Neotropical regions.
