Species Solonaima pallescens (Distant, 1907)

Compiler and date details

13 August 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

  • Type data:

Syntype(s) BMNH Female (coll.: iv.1904, F.P. Dodd), Kuranda, Queensland; BMNH Male (coll.: v.1904, Dodd), Kuranda, Queensland; BMNH Female (coll.: v.1904, Dodd), Kuranda, Queensland
Comment: Distant (1907) did not designate a holotype in his original publication but gave a range for size measurements, indicating that he had more than one specimen which are therefore syntypes. Hoch & Howarth (1989: 386) indicate that Distant's original material included three specimens, a female labeled in Distant's hand as type, and a topotypic male and female. Under the ICZN, Hoch & Howarth's (1989) publication that one of these is the "holotype" is invalid because it was not published as such in Distant's (1907) original description. In addition, it doesn't constitute a lectotype designation by default because ICZN Articles 74.5 and 74.6 exclude this possibility when the original publication indicates that syntypes exist. The specimens are therefore still syntypes and the male is available for lectotype designation.
