Species Solonaima baylissa Hoch & Howarth, 1989

Introduction

This is the most cave-adapted species of the genus Solonaima, regarded by Hoch & Howarth (1989) as being obligate cavernicolous. It is blind and colourless and known only from damp bad air caves in two lava flows near Mt Surprise in N. Queensland.

Ecological Descriptors

Adult: phloem feeder.

All stages: cave dweller.

Extra Ecological Information

Nymph might be phloem feeder or fungivore.

 

Diagnosis

This species can be distinguished from all other members of the genus by the absence of eyes and ocelli, the rounded head, the reduction of both tegmina and wings as well as by the shape of the male genitalia. (Hoch & Howarth 1989)
