Subspecies Sminthopsis fuliginosus fuliginosus (Gould, 1852)

Grey-bellied Dunnart

Introduction

Boullanger Island Dunnart was described as a subspecies of the Grey-bellied Dunnart Sminthopsis griseoventer in 1999, based on slight differences in morphology and molecular analyses (Crowther et al. 1999), notwithstanding previously published contradictory genetic data (Labrinidis et al. 1998). Start et al. (2006) reanalysed tissues and reassessed the morphological data, and concluded that neither the molecular nor the morphological data supported differentiation at taxonomic or evolutionally significant levels.
