Species Sminthopsis fuliginosus (Gould, 1852)

Grey-bellied Dunnart, Sooty Dunnart

Introduction

Despite past uncertainty regarding the exact identity of Gould's fuliginosus and the existence of appropriate type specimens (e.g. Kitchener et al. 1984), we follow a taxonomy suggested by Woinarski et al. 2014 in treating Sminthopsis griseoventer Kitchener, Stoddart & Henry, 1984 as a junior synonym of Sminthopsis fuliginosus (Gould 1852). This arrangement follows that of Jackson & Groves and the Australian Mammal Taxonomy Consortium.
