Species Smicrotatodelphax perkinsi Kirkaldy, 1906

Compiler and date details

24 December 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This is the smallest Australian delphacid. Kirkaldy gave it a length of 1.5 mm but Muir (1917) corrected this to 1.3 mm, presumably measuring Kirkaldy's original material. Kirkaldy (1906) implies that he had more than one specimen by the statement "Length: (males)" but this may have simply meant that the males of the species were of this length and he may have had only a single specimen on which he based this statement. The species was described from the wet tropics of North Queensland.

Diagnosis

Testaceous, frons embrowned, eyes black. Tegmina hyaline. [wings?*] hyaline. Tergites basally more or less pale orange brown, apex more or less black. Length: (males) 1.5 mm. (Kirkaldy 1906)
*Kirkaldy's description says "Tergites hyaline" followed by a description of the colour of the tergites. It is presumed that it is the hindwings which he intended as hyaline.
