Compiler and date details

30 November 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This is by far the largest subfamiliy of the Delphacidae and, as far as is known, all are grass-feeding. The world's worst planthopper pests of grass crops such as rice, cereals, maize and sugar cane are in this group.

Diagnosis

The diagnostic feature of this subfamily is the shape of the hind tibial spur which is flattened and bears either a single tooth at the apex (tribe Tropidocephalini) or a long or short series of teeth along the outer margin (tribe Delphacini).
