Species Siphanta granulicollis (Stål, 1859)

Compiler and date details

7 March 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

S. granulicollis is the most widespread and abundant species in the granulicollis group and over most of its range the male genitalia are quite consistent. Specimens from localities in western Victoria and SE South Australia show some variation in male genitalia which may indicate recent speciation and the presence of a cryptic species. It is likely that the record from Swan River, Western Australia is due to an introduction from eastern Australia. Fletcher (1985) discussed the likely location of Melichar's type locality "St Helena" and determined that it was most likely an island named St Helena in Moreton Bay, SE Queensland rather than St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Diagnosis

granulicollis Group. Head short, frons longer than widest part which is level with antennae. Vertex with apical margin evenly rounded or obtusely angulate. Apical and basal margins of vertex more or less parallel. Tegmen with apical and sutural angles rounded. Costal margin convex throughout, more strongly so on basal half, so that widest part of tegmen at about midlength. Clavus long, extending nearly to sutural angle, so branching of M1+2 well basal of claval apex. Colour green, fading to yellow or orange in dried specimens. Apex of head, fore- and mid-tibiae externally and usually tarsi, red. Tegmen usually with red border from apex of costal cell around apical margin and claval margin to apex of clavus, this border interrupted by green vein endings. Outer claval vein usually red. Tegminal granules black.
S. granulicollis. Some specimens lack all red markings, otherwise as in granulicollis Group. Male pygofer with blunt triangular process (much reduced in specimens from Nelson, Victoria). Paramere narrow, with narrow triangular process at 4/5 length. Female third valvulae elongate triangular with pilose area ventral. Second valvulae gap widely U-shaped (Fletcher 1985).
