Introduction

Gerreids occur worldwide in tropical and temperate coastal marine and estuarine environments. Currently, eight genera and about 44 species are recognised (Nelson 2006), with three genera and 10 species from Australia.

Silverbiddies are distinctive in having a highly protrusible mouth. They reach a maximum length of 35 cm.

The Indo-Pacific species of the family have not been reviewed, but many have been studied in a series of papers by Iwatsuki and his colleagues (see Iwatsuki et al. 1996, 1998, 1999, 2007, 2012; Iwatsuki & Kimura 1997); these works are followed here. Woodland (2001) treated a number of species, some under different names from those used here. Also, he did not record some species from Australia that are included here. Further work is needed to verify the Australian fauna.
