Species Sicyopterus lagocephalus (Pallas, 1770)

Blue Streamgoby, Bichique, Blue Stream Goby, Rabbithead Cling-goby, Red-tailed Goby

Introduction

The species was originally described from two specimens, one a New World Sicydium and the second of unknown origin. A case was put to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature to suppress Gobius lagocephalus. There were considerable objections to the suppression (ICZN 2008). Kottelat (2007) selected a neotype to match the widespread Indo-Pacific species to which the name had been applied for many years. The Commission did not approve the suppression of the name (ICZN 2009). Sicyopterus lagocephalus was discovered in Australia relatively recently.
