Introduction

Worldwide the subfamily Serraninae comprises 13 genera and about 87 species (Nelson et al. 2016). One genus and five described species are known from Australia. Species are small- to medium-sized fishes found on the continental shelf. Maximum size is 60 cm. Acanthistius is sometimes placed here following Nelson (1994), based on Johnson (1983) and Kendall (1984). More recent work has suggested a relationship with Anthiadinae (as Anthiinae in Heemstra & Heemstra 2004), but Craig & Hastings (2007) suggested that the genus may not belong with the Serranidae. We follow Nelson et al (2016) and Anderson (2018) in placing that genus with the Anthiadinae.
