Species Sejus acanthurus Canestrini, 1884

Introduction

Sejus acanthurus Canestrini, 1884 was described from a “lamellicorne” beetle from Australia. It was subsequently recorded from Paraguay by Berlese (1888) and from Italy by Berlese (1892a), and these records were catalogued by Berlese (1892b), as Zercon acanthurus (Canestrini). However, both of these later records proved to be misidentifications – the specimens from Paraguay were later transferred to Seius paricornis Berlese, 1916, and the Italian records to Seius italicus Berlese, 1916 (Berlese, 1916, 1920; Castagnoli & Pegazzano, 1985). The Australian species S. acanthurus is still known only from the original record by Canestrini (1884). It has never been redescribed, and its identity and correct placement are not clear.
