Family SEJIDAE Berlese, 1885

Introduction

The family Sejidae Berlese, 1885 (originally spelled as Seiidae), should not be confused with the family Seiidae Berlese, 1913. The latter is now considered to be a synonym of Blattisociidae. This confusion was caused by misidentification of the type genus, as reviewed by Lekveishvili & Klompen (2004). The family includes five genera and 45 species of highly ornamented mites that occur in soil and litter, and especially in rotting wood (Lindquist et al. 2009). The largest genus, Sejus, was revised by Hirschmann (1991) and Hirschmann et al. (1991a, 1991b). Most species are easily recognised by a pair of prominent horns on the postero-lateral corners of the dorsal idiosoma. They are predators that feed on Collembola, other mites, and nematodes (Walter & Proctor 1998). The known Australian fauna includes one species of Epicrioseius and two species of Sejus, as well as unidentified species of Sejus reported by Shaw (1999) and Beaulieu et al. (2006, 2010), and species of Sejus sp. and Epicroseius sp. reported by Beaulieu & Walter (2007).
