Introduction

The family Scombrolabracidae comprises a single species, Scombrolabrax heterolepis. The Longfin Escolar is circumglobal in tropical and subtropical waters. It is benthopelagic in oceanic areas as adults, although larvae may occur inshore over depths of less than 100 m. Maximum size reached is 30 cm.

Scombrolabrax heterolepis has been referred to the Gempylidae previously, but Bond & Uyeno (1981) placed it in a separate suborder. Collette et al. (1984) also recognised the group as distinct from scombroids. Wiley & Johnson (2010) include the group with the Scombriformes.
