Suborder SACCOPHARYNGOIDEI

Sackpharynx Fishes

Compiler and date details

3 October 2018 - Dianne J. Bray & Douglass F. Hoese

Introduction

The four families of the suborder Saccopharyngoidei were previously placed in their own order, the Saccopharyngiformes by Robins (1989), Nelson (1994, 2006) and Paxton et al. (2006). Wiley & Johnson (2010) and Nelson et al. (2016) agreed with the morphological and molecular anaylses of Forey et al. (1996), Wang et al. (2003) and Inoue et al. (2004), by placing these families in the anguilliform suborder Saccopharyngoidei. Most members of this suborder are eel-like and bathypelagic, and all have a leptocephalus larval stage.
