Genus Rhinotus Cook, 1896
- Rhinotus Cook, O.F. 1896. [title unknown]. Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences 9: 2 [2] ["The name Rhinotus was first proposed by Cook, 1896. A type species was designated as “R. africanus (Siphonotus africanus, Cook)”. A diagnosis of the genus was not given, and a description of Siphonotus africanus Cook had not yet been published. The proposal of Rhinotus Cook, 1896, therefore, is not valid. The description of Siphonotus africanus, cited above, appeared October 1896, but in that paper the name Rhinotus is not mentioned. The only time that Cook mentioned Rhinotus again in connection with the specific name africanus was in the Brandtia paper, cited above. Unfortunately, the date of publication of Brandtia is unknown, and it is uncertain whether it was published before or after the description of S. africanus had appeared. Its date is fixed here preliminarily as 31 December 1896. If it turns out that the cited page of Brandtia appeared before October1896, i.e. before the appearance of the description of S. africanus, the name Rhinotus Cook is unavailable. In that case the authorship of Rhinotus would go to Pocock, 1906 (in: Gardiner (ed.), The Fauna and Geography of the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes 2: 1045)" (Jeekel 1971: 43)].
