Introduction
Siphonotidae currently contains 11 genera in two subfamilies and appears to be restricted to the Southern Hemisphere (Hoffman 1977, 1980). Although only five species are listed here, more than 90 undescribed Australian species have been recognised by Dennis Black (La Trobe University) from all parts of Australia except the Northern Territory (Black 1997; D.G. Black, pers. comm.). Among the undescribed forms are aquatic species, including one first discovered on the campus of Macquarie University in Sydney (Burrows et al. 1994). The distributions of three undescribed Tasmanian siphonotids have been published by Mesibov (1999).
