Species Quilopsus koebelei Webb, 1983

Compiler and date details

4 October 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This species is based on a male holotype and a single female paratype. The holotype is labelled from "Australia" and collected by Koebele. Arthur Koebele collected mainly in coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales in 1904 and 1905 although he may have visited other parts of the country at other times. It is unknown if he ever visited Western Australia which is where the female paratype originated. The distribution given here is therefore tentative based on a presumption that the holotype came from Koebele's visit to Queensland and on Webb's (1983) tentative identification of the female from Western Australia as this species. Determination of other male specimens of this species from Australian collections will provide a more precise distribution for the species. Neither of the type specimens is in an Australian collection.

Diagnosis

Yellow to brownish yellow; basal triangles and a pair of central spots on scutellum, veins of forewing and dorsum of abdomen brown; a small brown spot sometimes present on vertex near to each eye and another on face against each ocellus. Male genitalia with processes of segment X elongate, directed dorsally, each with a very small basal process from medial surface. Styles with apex truncate. Aedeagus with shaft slightly expanded distally in lateral aspect; apex with a pair of short processes from dorsoanterior corner and a pair of broad flange-like processes laterally. Female genitalia [of specimen presumed to be this species] with posterior margin of pregenital sternite slightly convex each side of midline. Second valvulae with teeth extended over distal two thirds of valvulae. Expanded apex of third valvulae about half length of narrow basal region and extended about half its length beyond pygophore (Webb 1983).
