Introduction

The Superfamily containing the leafhoppers (Cicadellidae) and Horned Treehoppers (Membracidae) frequently has been named Cicadelloidea, particularly by Australian authors. However, the use of Membracis as the nominal genus for an assemblage of groups roughly equivalent to the Cicadelloidea as used by authors, predates the use of Cicadella, which was also confused in its usage. Unfortunately, the term Membracoidea has been used for various assemblages not necessarily correlated to its use here. However, most of the American and European literature now uses Membracoidea in preference to Cicadelloidea and for this reason this usage is also followed here.
