- Apogon rhodopterus Bleeker, P. 1852. Bijdrage tot de kennis der ichthyologische fauna van Singapore. Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch Indië 3: 51-86 [62] [derivation is from Greek rhodon = rose or red + pteron = wing or fin and transliterated to a masculine noun; see also Bleeker, 1874].

Holotype RMNH 5574 (mid-sized specimen of 3 specimens according to Randall, J.E. & Fraser, T.H. 1999. Clarification of the western Pacific cardinalfish species Apogon trimculatus and A. rhodopterus, with description of a similar new species. Raffles Bulletin of Zoology 47(2): 617–633 figs 1–5 pls 1–3), Singapore.
