Genus Pompilus Fabricius, 1798

Introduction

Pompilus was revised by Day (1981) and restricted to a few Old World species. Wasbauer & Kimsey (1985) rejected the work of Day and retained the subgeneric classification that had been in use. Apart from Pompilus cinereus, which as a synonym of the type of the genus and would be included in Pompilus s. str., none of the Australian species recorded in Pompilus s. l. have been placed in subgenera. Consequently, [Elliott 2007 ignored] the subgeneric arrangement until further examination of the genus determines its validity and the Australian species are placed.
