Subfamily Pompilinae

Introduction

The Australian Pompilinae is represented by 13 genera and 132 species. Species of Ctenostegus Haupt, 1930, Turneromyia Banks, 1941, Episyron Schiødte, 1837, Paracyphononyx Gribodo, 1884, Anoplius Dufour, 1834 and Pompilus Fabricius, 1798 primarily consist of wasps with a black integument, coloured or banded with grey/silvery pubescence. The “collaris” mimicry complex of Evans involves species of Ctenostegus, Turneromyia, Paracyphononyx and Episyron with black and orange colouration. Three species of Pompilinae, Batozonellus maculifrons (Smith, 1873), Anoplius (Orientanoplius) canifrons (Smith, 1855) and Pompilus cinereus (Fabricius, 1775) have extensive extralimital distributions.
