Cosmopolitan genus, including the Arctic and Antarctic with a known depth range of intertidal to 3382 m.

Diagnosis

Carapace generally with prominent rostrum and wide incisur; incisure more open in males than in females; posterior with or without caudal process; surface smooth, punctate or reticulate, but without ribs; selvage with fringed lamellar prolongation. First antenna: 2nd segment with 0 to 4 ventral bristles, 0 or lateral bristle, and 1 or 2 dorsal bristles. Second antenna: endopod of female 2-segmented: first segment with 509 short bristles; end segment with 2 to 5 bristles; 9th segment of exopod with 6 bristles in male, 7 in female; some bristles broken off on gravid females; endopod of male 3-segmented, first segment with 5 bristles, 2nd segment with 2 or 3 bristles; 3rd segment reflexed with 1 long proximal and 2 short terminal bristles. Mandibula: dorsal margin of basale with 2 to 7 bristles. Fifth limb: 2nd exopodal segment of female and juvenile male with large quadrate tooth. Seventh limb: terminus with 0 to 12 pegs opposite comb. Furca: secondary claws not present between main claws; claws either decreasing in length posteriorly along lamella or weak claws following strong claws.
