Introduction
(From Syme & Poore, 2006) Remarks.—Poulsen (1965) erected this genus for four existing species and seven new species but did not designate a type species. Kornicker (1975) designated the type species as Asterope muelleri Skogsberg, 1920 and in doing so validated the genus name. Parasterope is the largest genus in the family, with 39 species. The genus is diagnosed by the unique combination of characters: first antenna s-seta with configuration 0+6, first antenna d-seta minute or absent, mandible e-seta present, mandible exopod length greater than 50 percent length of dorsal margin of endopod article 1. Specific differences are based on setal counts on appendages, nodes (protuberances) on appendages, presence or absence of lateral eye, and carapace size.

Diagnosis
No ridges present on infold between posterior list and edge of valve. First antenna: dorsal margin of 3rd segment with 6 spinous bristles; sensory bristle of 5th segment of female with 6 terminal filaments; d-bristle of 8th segment minute or missing. Second antenna: endopod of adult male 3-segmented with elongate 3rd segment reflexed upon 2nd. Mandibula: exopod extending beyond middle of dorsal margin of 1st exopod segment; tip of ventral branch of coxale endite with 1 to 3 short hairs or teeth. Maxilla: distal endite with 3 spinous bristles; end segment of endopod with 1 bristle. Sixth limb: anterior margin with 1 upper and 1 lower bristle. Furca: each lamella with 8–10 claws with posterior 1–3 claws bristle-like, often pointing backward.
